Short bursts of intense exercise may improve heart health more effectively than longer, moderate workouts, a recent study suggests. The research found that sprint intervals produced a surge of proteins linked to reduced risks of diabetes and cardiovascular disease, surpassing the effects of steady cycling.

The molecular response to sprinting

The study, published in Cell Reports Medicine, monitored 19 healthy young men who completed either 90 minutes of moderate cycling or six 30-second all-out sprints. Blood tests showed sprinting altered over 200 metabolites and significantly increased proteins associated with blood vessel growth, tissue repair, and hormonal signaling.

Lead author Luke Olsen, PhD, described how exercise stimulates communication between organs. “A contracting muscle might release a protein to signal the liver for more fuel,” he explained. “These fuels are then released and absorbed by the muscle, enabling it to continue working.”

When the team cross-referenced the sprint-activated proteins with medical records from over 53,000 UK Biobank participants, 32 of 33 proteins tied to lower cardiometabolic risk were influenced by sprinting. Moderate exercise affected only three.

Implications for exercise routines

Senior author Paul Cohen, MD, PhD, stated the results clarify why high-intensity exercise yields metabolic advantages. “Our data identify specific proteins that may contribute to these effects,” he noted. However, the study focused on immediate molecular changes, leaving long-term outcomes uncertain.

One limitation: the study included only healthy young men. It remains unclear whether the same protein surges occur in women, older adults, or individuals with preexisting conditions. Still, the results support the idea that intensity plays a key role, even in short workouts.

The benefits of sprinting don’t erase those of endurance exercise. The body’s response to movement is complex, and the authors emphasized both forms have value. The ideal approach may involve variety—combining steady-state cardio with occasional bursts of effort, adapted to personal ability.

For now, the advice is straightforward. If you want to enhance heart health, a few minutes of all-out effort could deliver strong results. But it won’t replace the importance of regular physical activity over time.
