Divya Caculo, a consultant paediatric ophthalmologist at Sankara Eye Hospital in Bengaluru, noted that recent ophthalmic developments are changing care. She cited low‑dose atropine therapy and specialised optical designs as evidence‑based approaches that are already reducing near‑sightedness in children.

Research and technology components

Beyond drug and lens options, the partnership will include genetic testing for inherited retinal disorders. The doctor also mentioned the use of wide‑field retinal imaging combined with anti‑VEGF therapies for treating ROP, a condition that can lead to blindness in premature infants.

Artificial intelligence‑enabled screening tools form another pillar of the plan. “I view AI‑enabled screening tools as a key change, allowing clinicians to map and detect disorders at earlier stages to bridge accessibility gaps in underserved communities,” she said.

School‑based vision programs

Namratha Hegde, optometry faculty and lead for institutional research at Sankara, explained that the collaboration will launch vision screening programmes in schools. The goal is early identification and referral of refractive errors, a step that could reduce the need for later corrective surgery.

The memorandum also calls for academic exchange, including faculty visits and joint publications. Researchers from both institutions will have access to shared data sets, which could accelerate the development of new treatment protocols.

Professor Alan Cheng, an ophthalmology professor at the University of Sydney who is not involved in the deal, said the initiative reflects a growing trend of cross‑border partnerships in eye care, but the real test will be how quickly findings move from the lab to the clinic. He added that funding and regulatory alignment often pose hurdles for multinational research.

Potential impact on public health

Myopia rates have risen sharply in Asia over the past decade, prompting health authorities to issue guidelines. The World Health Organization notes that myopia could affect half of the world’s population by 2050. If the collaborative efforts succeed, they may provide a model for other regions facing similar challenges.
