A new study suggests that daily coffee consumption might be linked to less abdominal fat, more muscle mass, and better hormone balance. Researchers found that people who drink the most coffee tend to have lower visceral fat and higher skeletal muscle mass than non-drinkers, even when their body mass index remains the same. The findings highlight how coffee intake relates to body composition.
Scientists analyzed data from over 2,200 participants in a 46-year follow-up study in Finland. The group provided details on their coffee habits and underwent health assessments measuring body mass index, waist-to-hip ratio, and body fat percentage. The results showed that heavy coffee drinkers had a leaner body composition.
Luca Verroest, the lead author from the University of Oulu, noted that BMI alone often misses important differences in body composition. He pointed out that two people can have the same BMI but vastly different amounts of fat versus muscle. The study suggests habitual coffee drinkers have a comparatively leaner profile with less visceral fat.

Higher coffee intake was also connected to lower levels of branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs). These amino acids are known biomarkers for cardiometabolic health and are associated with obesity, type 2 diabetes, and heart disease. Verroest explained that coffee itself is not a source of BCAAs, so the finding adds an interesting angle to how coffee might relate to this metabolic pathway, though it remains a correlational observation.
The study uncovered distinct hormone patterns for men. Habitual coffee drinkers showed favorable profiles for total testosterone and sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG). Verroest noted that these hormonal patterns fit coherently with the more favorable glucose-insulin profile observed in the same men.
The results are observational, meaning they show an association rather than proof that coffee causes these changes. The study cannot determine if coffee directly improves metabolic health or simply tracks alongside it.
Dr. Mir Ali, a bariatric surgeon, said the findings align with other research showing caffeine may have benefits for weight loss and overall health. He noted that coffee appears to have a mild appetite suppressant effect and may stimulate metabolism. The study supports the idea that coffee stimulates certain hormonal functions, which could contribute to improvements in visceral fat and other health markers.

Registered dietitian Monique Richard emphasized that coffee is a chemically complex food containing caffeine, chlorogenic acids, and trigonelline. She explained that the biological response likely depends on the whole coffee matrix rather than a single compound. Richard also pointed out that coffee is just one piece of a much larger metabolic picture.
For people relying on coffee to manage their health, Richard suggests it should complement, not replace, foundational behaviors. She recommends pairing coffee consumption with adequate protein, fiber-rich whole foods, resistance training, physical activity, sleep, and stress management. Richard also noted that what is added to the coffee matters, as a plain brewed coffee is metabolically very different from a 500-calorie beverage loaded with added sugar and syrups.
In practice, this means a morning latte with heavy cream and syrup probably won’t offer the same metabolic benefits as a black brew. The focus should remain on a balanced diet and lifestyle rather than a single beverage to see meaningful changes in body composition.
